2021 Delayed Games So Far

By: Bryce L. Jackson

The videogame release schedule has been anything but certain in the last year as companies continue to work from home and all the inefficiencies that cause game development. Eventually, companies bite the bullet and it’s easy to lose track of what has been pushed back and if they’ve received a new release date. Here’s where we are so far and it’s expected that this list will continue to grow.

Dying Light 2 - 2021

Dying light fell to the delay demons early on in 2020, before the pandemic took full hold. Since then studio Techland have been patterings of information from the developers to keep fans in the know, with hopes that they will release in 2021.

Deathloop - September 14th, 2021

Back 4 Blood - October 12th

Turtle Rock Studios announced the delay of the game after a beta test period that ended with no majorly negative impressions.

Gotham Knights - 2022

The WB Montreal studio showed off their co-op game starring the Bat Family and it received cautious optimism. Funny enough, during a recording of their weekly podcast, James and the crew at Anime Lately this game came up as games that they were excited for the night before it was announced to be delayed.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga - 2021

Hogwarts Legacy - 2022

This game has had a rough development cycle, even before the pandemic. Bogged down by controversies of the parent property, that controversy so potent that it led to the departure of a lead developer.

Prince of Persia - No new date given

Far Cry 6 - 2021

Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 - No new release date

This game made a grand appearance at Microsoft’s XBOX Series X games showcase. Since then the game was delayed. The publisher removed the developer, Hardsuit Labs, from the project, leading to the developer laying off staff.

Unconfirmed Delays: PlayStation Studios First-Party Titles

End card from Sony’s CES 2021 conference.

Sony’s first-party titles like Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Returnal. God of War, etc. started the year with no official release dates. At their virtual conference at CES 2021, they let it slip a few release dates that they intended to have. As of writing, Returnal will release April 30th (1 month off), Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has a June date and Kena will release in August. And not all listed games had hard dates; only that they intend to release in 2021, with it being understood that God of War Ragnarok might have already slipped into 2022.

Overwatch 2 - No release date yet

Since the Sojourn character and Overwatch 2 reveal at Blizzcon 2019, Blizzard Ent. has been quietly chugging away at the game that wants to expand into more single-player game modes and content. The game has always had a “maybe it’ll release at such-n-such date” but nothing solid, nor has there been any official word from anyone at liberty to say on the dev team. Right now, it’s “maybe later this year, if not 2022.”
