Is MoviePass On It's Last Leg?

MoviePass Goes Back To Their Unlimited Plan

MoviePass has gone back to their unlimited plan which offers subscribers the ability to watch one movie every calendar day. Recently MoviePass was offering a promotional $29.95 three-month plan that would offer users the ability to go to 4 movies a month and a free trial of iHeartRadio's All Access streaming package.

When asked about the recent changes MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe had this to say:

“We never planned to abandon the flagship product that everybody loves,” “Any time we’ve done a promotional package, we’ve taken the monthly plan off our site.”

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lowe said that he didn’t know if MoviePass would go back to offering one movie a day, but later stated that he didn't want to turn people away from the iHeartRadio promotion that only allowed 4 movies a month.

Lowe also said:

“It’s marketing 101,” “We wanted to focus everybody on this partnership promotion. If people knew the [movie-a-day] plan was coming back, they might not be interested in the iHeartRadio deal.”

Since MoviePass announced their $9.95 a month plan which included one movie every calendar day and you could see your favorite movies as many times as you wanted, it was no brainer for new subscribers to sign up for MoviePass's seemingly incredible deal. In the terms and conditions MoviePass states that they are allowed to change their terms whenever they want and they have certainly taken advantage of that.

After Avengers: Infinity War opened this weekend, MoviePass stopped subscribers from being able to see multiple viewings of the same movie. Lowe said that the change will help to prevent fraud. The company believes that people may be using their MoviePass to purchase tickets and then resell them.

The company has been losing money and claims that they are looking into monetizing their now 2 million subscribers by partnering with theater chains, and running ads.
