My Halloween Film Favorites

by: Mia Francis

The world of horror has gone through a renaissance in the last decade and here is my list of some of my favorites to enjoy today.

Hereditary (2018)

This movie is in a category all its own. It masterfully speaks to the way we deal with loss, mourning, and unveiling the secrets of someone’s past that then devolves into absolute terror for all those involved. This film is a masterpiece of modern horror.

Insidious (2010)

This unsung gem of the 2010s has created an interesting look at what leads up to possession and the horror that ensues for the loved ones witnessing these events and creates an intriguing and horrifying story of where our souls can go when we’re resting.

The Shining (1980) / Doctor Sleep (2019)

You can’t have one without the other and though the father of modern horror (Stephen King) didn’t like The Shinning film, I think it was an artistic outlook on what haunted house horror could be when done right. Doctor Sleep takes the rich tapestry of the King universe and adapts it into a beautifully told cinematic masterpiece that the horror genre rarely gets.

It Follows (2014)

Never have I seen a horror movie use such an interesting allegory and make it this suspenseful. This movie keeps the tension high throughout and it doesn’t let up!

Annabelle Creation (2017)

Building on a universe that deserves its own list due to its fantastic thematic elements, this movie makes the origin of Annabelle a grounded & relatable story of loss and somehow more horrifying than it already was.

Honorable classic Mention

The Exorcist (1973)

This horror classic has aged like a fine wine amongst the watered-down arena of the horror genre of today. It continues to deliver on the chilling aspects of what makes possession horror one of my favorite subgenres.
