Snowpiercer Movie Review
So I saw a trailer for a TV series called ‘Snowpiercer‘ starring one of my favorite actors Daveed Diggs. I was intrigued and wanted to start it immediately. Then I found out there was a movie from 2013 that I somehow missed. So before I start the TV series I decided to watch the movie and man it was amazing.
The movie stars Chris Evans alongside Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, and Ed Harris. I had no idea what to expect and went in blind, and I'm glad I did.
Down below I will give my theories and thoughts alongside a LIGHT-SPOILER review. I won't go too in depth but I will discuss the main storyline so please be aware if you haven't seen this movie and would like to.
The movie is a post-apocalyptic film that plays on global warming. Scientists tried to slow down global warming and inevitably ended up causing a winter wonderland. After the failure, the plan was to build a train that would circle around the world until the ice had melted. Only the elite was supposed to be able to board the train leaving the rest of the world to freeze to death. The lower class individuals boarded and snuck on the train and were put in the tail end of the train and treated less than the others on the train.
The movie plays on classism, greed, and many other things that are still relative to this day. In the beginning of the movie, they find a violin player and ask him to perform for those of higher class in the front of the train. It was a form of symbolism in which I believe to get out of your current situation of a stagnant lower life you must entertain others. There is also something I noticed was the fact that they took the kids and had them powering the train. I think this was a play on big companies knowingly thriving on child labor but because it benefits the almighty dollar it is for a greater good and we turn the blind eye to it.
Some other theories on symbolism I have about this movie are that the train is like Noah's Ark in the bible. They all gather on the train to escape snow much like the ark with rain. Also at the end of the movie, there are only two left to repopulate the earth kind of like Adam and Eve. Religious symbolism is all throughout this movie and even Wilford is treated as a God on the train.
I can’t wait to dive into the TV series because this movie was really great and I now have high expectations for the show. My overall ranking for this movie is a 9/10. I will definitely be returning with a TV series review soon. With that being said we will see you guys on the next one.
