Sony Giving Users Username Editing Ability

By: Bryce L. Jackson

Some PlayStation users started their accounts with juvenile names and have grown into more mature individuals. Then get a harsh reminder of the foolish person they once were when they log in to the PSN accounts.

Those days of shame may be coming to an end as Sony will soon launch the ability to change their user ID. Sony will first have a test period where select users that were previously testers of past PlayStation System Software betas.

Here’s how the system will work: Users will be able to edit their names via the Settings tab or from the profile page of the PS4. After the first change, Sony will charge $10 to non-PS Plus members and $5 to members for additional changes. This function was put in place to prevent players from griefing and hiding their true usernames. After someone has changed their username, the old name will remain visible to friends while they get familiar with the new PSN ID.

The username change is a twofold operation as a majority of titles will need to adapt to accept users that may change their names. This aligns with a story floating around before this news dropped that game developers were preparing for PSN ID changes. Sony said in its release:

Please note, not all games and applications for PS4, PS4, and Vita are guaranteed to support the online ID change, and users may occasionally encounter issues or errors in certain games. If for any reason you experience issues after changing your ID, you can revert back to your original ID for free at any time... Reverting back to an old ID will resolve most issues caused by the ID change.

Sony will list games that will support ID changes on its blog when they announce the official start of the editing function.

The test period will extend through November and users can expect the wide release of the ID change capability in 2019.
